A variety of luminaires from the Crompton Lighting Division of Cooper Lighting and Security have been installed at the offices of the Belfast Telegraph, helping to create a substantially improved working environment for staff.

As part of a major refurbishment of the building in Royal Avenue, Belfast, the newspaper's proprietor Independent News & Media chose to use Crompton's Solstar compact fluorescent downlighters, Intellect Digital intelligent recessed fluorescent luminaires and Laserline tubular lighting system.

According to general electrical manager, Robert Brown, the change in working environment has been most marked in the editorial department, where previously the lighting had, somewhat unusually, consisted of metal-halide 250W uplighters. "Not only did these create problems with reflections, but they were also extremely inefficient," he commented.

In their place, Crompton Lighting supplied approximately 100 Intellect Digital Moducell 2 x 40W intelligent luminaires, which use a combination of occupancy-detection and daylight-sensing technology to reduce energy consumption, while providing lighting of the highest quality.

Nearby, the newspaper's internet suite is now lit by Crompton's Solstar downlighters, together with the Laserline tubular fluorescent lighting system, which is suspended in an inverted position for upward illumination of the ceiling.

Solstars have also been installed in the canteen and in the lobby area, where some were specified with halo glass - a carefully designed glass attachment with a ground bevelled edge and a satin frosted band, providing maximum sparkle and a suitably prestigious appearance.

"Staff comments about the lighting have been very positive," said Mr Brown. "We managed to make a significant improvement to the working environment while at the same time reducing energy consumption."
