New central battery systems comply with latest emergency lighting standard

3 September 2002

The new Menvier-JSB series of central battery systems from Cooper Lighting and Security have been designed to satisfy the requirements of a recently introduced standard for emergency lighting central power supply systems, BS EN 50171 (2001).

Legislative changes in the last 2 years have greatly extended the requirement for emergency lighting in open areas in buildings, as well as increasing the minimum lighting level to 0.5 lux - and both of these factors have stimulated the use of slave luminaires powered by a central battery system.

The new Menvier-JSB range comprises both AC/DC and static inverter systems, all of which are available with a choice of five different battery types to suit the requirements of individual applications.

All systems are fitted with a solid-state, constant-voltage charger that is capable of recharging the batteries to 80% of capacity within 12 hours, reaching 100% within 24 hours. A full-charge LED gives a clear visual indication that the battery recharging process is complete after a mains failure or test.

Deep discharge protection takes the form of a low battery voltage disconnect (LVD) circuit, which automatically disconnects the load when the battery voltage falls below a pre-set level. A latching LVD alarm provides a warning that the unit has been subjected to a discharge beyond its rated capacity, and this can only be reset by acknowledging the alarm condition.

The system's audible alarm has a mute facility as standard, and there is also a facility for connecting a remote alarm for use in areas not visited regularly, such as plant rooms.

Equipped with clearly labelled and easy-to-understand indicators, the units feature digital LCD displays of battery-compartment ambient temperature, charge and discharge currents, and battery voltage.

The AC/DC units can be specified with output voltages of 24, 50 or 110V and durations of 1, 2 or 3 hours, while the static inverters offer outputs ranging from 500W to 17kW, with 1 hour or 3 hour durations.

All Menvier-JSB central battery systems are housed in a robust, standard-sized cubicle fabricated from 1.6mm thick zinc-coated mild steel sheet and finished in RAL7032 grey stove-enamelled powder epoxy polyester paint.
