Birmingham Metropolitan College

Birmingham Metropolitan College

Background

Having been one of the major providers of further and higher education in Birmingham for over 100 years, Matthew Boulton College made its mark on the 21st Century by relocating to stunning new purpose-built premises at the heart of Birmingham’s Eastside district. A subsequent merger saw it renamed as Birmingham Metropolitan College, but the award-winning building retains its distinct identity as the Matthew Boulton Campus.

The Needs

The key goal for the Matthew Boulton lighting scheme was to achieve a lighting level of 400 lux with a uniformity of 0.8 throughout all the lecture rooms in the building. In addition, suitable lighting was required for laboratories, study areas, restaurant and walkways.

The Solution

Cooper Lighting and Safety supplied nearly 1500 fluorescent luminaires of various types for the Matthew Boulton site. The requisite lighting level of 400 lux for the lecture rooms was achieved using over 1000 Moduspec semi-recessed fluorescent luminaires, which deliver high efficiency and excellent light distribution, with a gently lit ceiling wash effect controlled by a linear reeded lens.

The walkways were illuminated by approximately 300 Solstar recessed fluorescent downlights – equipped with stylish blue halo glass attachments – while the restaurant and laboratory areas were lit by Moduwall and Moduseal recessed fluorescent luminaires.

All installation work was carried out by electrical contractor Interserve of West Bromwich, and the consultants for the project were the Birmingham office of Couch Perry & Wilkes and SDA of Sheffield.

Drawing on a variety of different products to suit the requirements of each particular space, the Cooper lighting scheme helped to create an environment that is both efficient and conducive to learning.
