The Hub, Doncaster College

The Hub, Doncaster College

A new £65 million building, known as the Hub, was constructed for Doncaster College in the centre of the town. The waterfront campus offers many state-of-the-art educational facilities, including a 100-seat lecture theatre, a 200-seat drama studio and a twostorey learning resource centre, as well as first-class catering, sports and leisure facilities.

The Needs

With such vastly different areas to illuminate, the lighting scheme for this prestigious development inevitably required a wide variety of luminaire types in order to provide the necessary lighting levels and quality of lighting. In addition, emergency lighting was required throughout the building to enable students and staff to exit safely in the event of power failure.

The Solution

The scheme devised by Cooper Lighting and Safety’s lighting design department, working closely with main contractor N.G. Bailey, used no less than 14 different products from Cooper’s extensive range of commercial and industrial luminaires, together with a selection of self-test exit signs and emergency luminaires.

Classrooms were lit by either Synthesis or Wafer T5 suspended fluorescent luminaires, both of which offer a combination of direct and indirect illumination in line with the latest lighting design standards. Laboratory illumination was provided by Moduseal IP65 modular recessed fluorescent luminaires.

Lecture theatres used the Clareo range of pendant architectural downlights, while public areas and atria were illuminated by Reef wall-mounting uplighters and Solstar compact fluorescent downlights.

Plant and maintenance areas had particular requirements that were satisfied with the Tufflite range of robustly constructed IP65 luminaires and a number of Zone II fluorescent luminaires, which carry full ATEX certification and an EEx n classification.

Emergency lighting included Recessed Safe Edge and Royalux exit signs, along with New Safe 8 self-contained 8W T5 luminaires and Beamlite twin-spot luminaires.

As well as being able to offer such a wide variety of different products, Cooper Lighting and Safety helped to speed up the installation process by supplying the luminaires pre-wired with cable and connectors of the customer’s choice.

The Result

The lighting scheme for the new Doncaster College building delivered the requisite illumination levels and lighting quality in many different kinds of spaces, helping to create a superb learning environment for students and staff alike.
